Victim Assistance |
|
The Victim Assistance Program at the St. Charles Parish District Attorney's Office is designed to act as an advocate for the victims of crimes. The program gives the victim a voice in court proceedings. The program also helps to guide victims through the often-confusing criminal justice system. The coordinator will act as a mediator between the victim and the prosecutor. The coordinator can notify the prosecutor of any special circumstances surrounding the criminal case. In order to prevent confrontations, the coordinator may also escort the victim to and from court proceedings. The Victim Assistance Program can also offer counseling referrals to crime victims. Victims of certain crimes are entitled to register with the program free of charge. The eligible crimes have been selected by the state. However, the District Attorney's Office has expanded that list to include more crimes than those required by state law. The victim can register through the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office for program assistance. In certain cases, even if the victim does not register, the coordinator may contact them to discuss the case. The laws regarding crime victims are rapidly changing. In order to stay abreast of the current laws, the coordinator attends bi-monthly meetings. The coordinator also participates in various seminars and training sessions throughout the year. These sessions function to further his knowledge of crime victim law. |
